Dick Crest was the Jazz Band director while I was at the College of San Mateo. He was a real pro. He had his own professional band that worked in the summer when school was off. He encouraged me and had the school band play my 5/4 time arrangement of Love for Sale. It was my first attempt at writing a chart for a jazz band.
Bud Young taught music theory and history. His theory classes expanded the knowledge that I had gained from Gene Bardolli. His 20th Century music class opened my mind and ears to the techniques and sounds that 20th Century composers were using.
Both Dick Crest and Bud Young were positive influences on me at a time in my life that I really needed it.
